Top 10 Easiest Things To Recycle by John C. Arkin

Just about everything is recyclable. One way or the other everything will return to dust at some point in the future. The only differences are how quickly and in what form will they get there. Recycling is a process that helps the products along their path in the right way. The mantra of "reduce-reuse-recycle" is all tied up in the recycling process regardless of the fact that "recycle" is used in the mantra. Unfortunately, some items shoot right through the recycling process to turn to dust after only a few product life cycles. Others, however, take longer to get through the recycling process -which is where reduce, reuse parts come in- and stick around for a second, third fourth and more lives. These are the products environmentalists like and are often the easiest to recycle.

The most and easiest material to recycle

The most recycled material on the planet is steel. For the most part, this is due to the number of cars manufactured and the amount of commercial construction waste generated each year. Steel is a great reuse item because it can be melted and recast without losing integrity. In many cases, the next printer case you see may be recycled steel or something close to it. Printers are notoriously associated as a price loss leader so cheap steel and components need to be found; used and recycled again if they are to be considered viable recycled products.

Aluminum

Aluminum cans are a recycled product that most will be familiar with. They may not be the most recycled product but they can be considered one on the most beneficially recycled where trash and aluminum prices are concerned. Your next printer likely won't have much aluminum from cans in it but it will help with other areas of printing like markers in the ink cartridges.

Recycled printers

We've seen the recycled products being used in components of a printer, but what about recycling the printer as well. You may not think about it all that much, but there are quite a few minerals in computer peripherals like printers, towers and monitors.

Maybe not steel

In many printers, there is a good amount of steel included. For the most part, however, they are comprised of plastic. Plastic makes up the most waste by volume in our waste stream and is readily recyclable into computer shells and more specifically printer components.

Although there are many products that may not be the most recycled, in whatever measured you might consider, the world's population is starting to recycle just about anything they can think of. Yard waste is a very big category; glass is a large category while paper and cardboard are perhaps the most profitable categories. When you look around, you may also consider; the carpet you're standing on, the filters your furnace uses and the waste fluids you use every day when recycling.

Making Money by Recycling Ink Cartridges and Cellphones by James Kara Murat

When you use up your ink cartridges, what do you do with them? Do you simply take them out of your printer and chuck them into the waste basket? And your cellphone - what do you do with it once it gets broken or another model captures your fancy? Do you throw out your old cellphones too or do you just let them languish in the bottom of a drawer?

There are better fates that you could relegate your old cellphones and empty ink cartridges to, aside from just letting them collect dust or throwing them away. In fact, dumping your old cellphones and empty ink cartridges in the trash is a wasteful activity. It wastes the expensive resources that went into creating them, not to mention the fact that they pose harm to the environment.

The best way that you can get rid of your old cellphones and empty ink cartridges is to recycle them. And did you know that you can make money out of recycling old cellphones and ink cartridges?

Why Should You Recycle Ink Cartridges and Cellphones?

Each cellphone and ink cartridge is a bundle of plastic and metal. Plastic is created from oil, and we all know that oil is a non-renewable resource. The same goes with metal. Metal is not a renewable resource either.

When we throw away an ink cartridge or a cellphone instead of getting them recycled, we throw away products crafted from non-renewable and easily depleted resources. These materials could have been used in making other things. The plastic from ink cartridges or cellphones can be melted and used to create other plastic materials like buckets or dustbins.

But it is not just a matter of wasting precious resources away. Ink cartridges and cellphones do not degrade and they also contain chemicals and materials that can be harmful to the environment. If they end up in a landfill, the chemicals and materials that ink cartridges and cellphones are built with can end up poisoning the soil and affecting the ground water.

How to Earn Money from Recycling Ink Cartridges and Cellphones

Earning money from recycling ink cartridges and cellphones is simple business. You just send them to a recycling center that specializes in ink cartridges and cellphones, and they will pay you for your stash. Some recycling centers buy ink cartridges and cellphones by piece, while others buy by bulk.

But if you are the type with a mind for business, you can go beyond simply selling your empty ink cartridges and old cellphones to a recycling center. You can set up your own ink refilling station or learn how to refurbish an old cellphone and sell it for profit.

When your ink cartridge starts to run dry or if you want to replace your cellphone, do not throw them away. Recycle them and make money from your efforts.

Battery Recycling: Help Your Environment by George Royal

Batteries may contain harmful metals and chemicals such as nickel cadmium, alkaline, mercury, nickel metal hydride and lead acid, which can contaminate the environment if not disposed properly. For example, when batteries containing cadmium is used in landfills, they will eventually dissolve and release the toxic substance that can seep into water supplies, posing serious health hazards for the population. This is why recycling batteries has become so important because it helps prevent pollution, and also saves resources.

The Recycling Process:

First of all, the batteries to be recycled are sorted according to chemistries such as nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal-hydride, lithium, alkaline etc. The combustible material, such as plastics and insulation, is then removed with a gas fired thermal oxidizer, which is the first step in the recycling process. Most recycling plants have scrubbers where the gases from the thermal oxidizer are neutralized to remove pollutants, producing clean, naked cells that contain precious metal content.

The metal in the batteries are then heated to liquefy, after they have been hacked into little pieces. Black slag left by burned out non-metallic substances are scraped off with a slag arm, and the different alloys that settle according to weight are skimmed off. Some plants pour the liquid metals directly into (65 pounds) or 'hogs' (2000 pounds) without separating on site, which are then shipped to metal recovery plants to produce nickel, chromium and iron re-melt alloy for the manufacturing of other metal products.

State and Federal Regulations in the United States:

The Mercury-Containing and Rechargeable Battery Management Act was passed in 1996 by the U.S. Congress which requires regulated batteries such as Ni-CD batteries and sealed lead-acid batteries to:

1. be easily removable from consumer products to make it easier to recover them for recycling 2. include in the label the battery chemistry, the "three chasing arrows" symbol, and a phrase that instructs users to properly recycle or dispose the battery 3. provide national uniformity in collection, storage, and transport 4. phase out the use of certain mercury-containing batteries

The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC): (www.rbrc.org)

The United States Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) was set up in 1994 as a non-profit, public service organization to help and promote the recycling of portable rechargeable batteries such as Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion), and Small Sealed Lead. It also educates rechargeable power users about the benefits and accessibility of rechargeable battery recycling. However, RBRC only recycles batteries that has RBRC Battery Recycling Seal. Manufacturers, marketers and collectors or rechargeable batteries or products that use them can contact RBRC at "licensee@rbrc.com" for better solutions. Other Contact Info:

RBRC 1000 Parkwood Circle Suite 450 Atlanta, GA 30339 Ph: 678-419-9990 Fax: 678-419-9986

Recent Developments:

The mercury reduction in batteries, which had already started in 1984, is still continued today. For example, batteries such as those containing alkaline have had about a 97 percent mercury reduction, and newer models may contain about one-tenth the amount of mercury previously contained in the typical alkaline battery, or may be zero-added mercury. A number of mercury-free, heavy-duty, carbon-zinc batteries are now available as alternatives. Technology such as silver-oxide and zinc-air button batteries contain less mercury so they are starting to replace mercuric-oxide batteries. Nickel-cadmium batteries can be reprocessed to reclaim the nickel, and cadmium free nickel and nickel-hydride system are also being researched. At present, most nickel-cadmium batteries are permanently sealed in appliances but changes are being made in regulations which will result in a more convenient retrieval and recycling of nickel-cadmium batteries.
